Valley Community Church Campout - Sept 10-12

We're going to have a great time together at the Vedder River Campground. We will be staying at group site "A". You can check in Friday after 3:00 pm and must be packed up by Sunday at 9:00 pm.

Cost: recommended donation toward this event is $50.00 per family (included both nights). You are responsible for your own food. Payment is due at the campground on Friday night.

There will be a Saturday Night Campfire Service at 7:30pm open to those visiting for the day as well as campers.

NOTE: There is no servie in Port Kells on Sunday morning.

Campground amenities include flush toilets, showers, laundry room, playground and various recreation sports equipment. Cultus Lake beach is only 5 minutes away.

Memorial Service for Phyllis Walker

The Greatest Adventure

Philippians 3:14 I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.

Following Jesus is a great adventure in life. As we live by faith in Christ, he leads us to impact those around us in a positive measure and he creates opportunities for us to grow as his people.
Think of how much more this is true when the adventure of following Christ is done together as a group. How much more opportunity to grow and impact those around us will God lead us into when we serve him together? My feeling is that God has much in store for us as a church in this year ahead. Therefore I have set as a theme for the church “The Greatest Adventure,” with Philippians 3:14 as a key scripture.

God wants us to press forward in this year. We are going to be challenged in personal relationships, missions involvement, spiritual growth and outreach to our neighbourhoods. As a church body we can rise to the challenges ahead and seize God’s opportunities for the benefit of God’s Kingdom, our church family and ourselves personally.

Get ready for a year of “The Greatest Adventure”.

Church Campout - Sept 11-13

This year's church campout is once again at Chilliwack's Vedder River Campground. We are staying at group campsite "A". Check in time is Friday after 3pm. Checkout Sunday before 9pm.

Directions: Take Hwy 1 East toward Chilliwack and turn off at exit 104 (sign reads #3 Road/Yarrow/Cultus Lake). Follow the signs the read Cultus Lake all the way through the small town of Yarrow. Once you cross the railroad tracks after Yarrow you are only 5 minutes away. Turn left onto Giesbrect Road (there is a sign on the side of the road that says "Vedder River Campground"). Follow the road all the way to the end (5215 Giesbrect Road) and you will find our campsite on the immediate right of the white check-in booth. If you have trouble call Pastor Rod Fair on his cellphone at 604-807-7868.

If you are coming only for Saturday the activities are as follows:

4:30pm Baptism, 6:00pm Family BBQ (please bring a salad to share); 7:30pm Campfire Service.

Invitation to Follow Jesus

Jesus extended an invitation to his disciples to “Come follow me.” He meant it. He literally invited them to leave their nets, their tax stall, their current job and become his followers. They spent time with him learning about the kingdom of God and doing the work along with Jesus. I’m sure that it was an amazing 3+ years that ended all to soon.
Yet even the disciples experienced the presence of Jesus after he left them through the person of the Holy Spirit. Jesus promised to be with them always and so they continued to follow Jesus by the power of the Holy Spirit. They changed their world because they continued to follow Christ.
You and I are at the same place today. Jesus is not physically with us so that we can touch him or hear his teaching directly from his mouth. But here we are following Jesus by the power of the Holy Spirit just like the early believers. God has not changed his tactics nor his desire to see his followers change their world. Christ is in you and he is the hope of glory.
What should we do then? We should follow Jesus like the disciples did. We listen to what the Spirit is saying to us and go forward in faith believing that God will use us to change our world. It is an awesome privilege to follow Jesus.

Every year there are people who dread the milestones of life that will inevitably come. Another birthday which pushes them over the hill or a another visit to the doctor who tells them they are not getting any younger. But there are also people who look forward to the milestones and anticipate the good things that will happen. It's exciting for those who are graduating or for those who buy a new home or have a baby.

So which type of person are you? Are you dreading the new year or are you excited for what will come?

As a church we should be excited. The things that God wants to do this year have never been done before. The depth to which God wants to teach us new things and demonstrate his goodness in the world as well as in our own lives, is far deeper in relationship than we live at today. There is much to look forward to.

It is time for each us us to take a hold of the days we are given, pray for God's direction and pursue godliness like never before. This will be a year to be remembered when we remember to make the most of it.

Transformational Love - a 50 Day Spiritual Adventure

“God is Love.” This is probably the simplest and yet most profound truth proclaimed in the Bible. Yet in it’s simplicity there is great depth. This spiritual adventure will bring the congregation of Valley Community Church through a time of examination of God’s love and what it means to the church as well as our personal lives. I will challenge you to not only know about God’s love but to let him transform your life with his love.

Jesus said that the greatest commandments are to Love the Lord your God and Love your neighbour (Mark 12:29-31). These commands are foundational for our church. They describe what we are about as a congregation and the truths we are trying to live out in our lives.

Authenticity is our core value of being real and honest with God and with one another. If we say we believe it then it will show in our lives. We, as a church, need to let God’s love encourage us, bring us hope, renew our way of thinking and transform our living. When it does this to our own lives, then the overflow of God’s love will affect the world around us.

God loves you more than you know. His love will change your life.

The church family is invited to spend Sunday afternoon, August 24, in Port Kells park for a picnic lunch. (Weather permitting) Just bring your own lunch to the park after service and we will fellowship together. Those wishing to use the pool afterward can swim between 1:30pm and 3:00pm (this is free). There is a good playground for small children and grassy areas for those wishing to play games like Bocce.

John Balaniuk Funeral Information

John Balaniuk passed into the presence of the Lord on Thursday, July 10th, 2008.
We extend our sympathy and prayers to the Balanuik family, especially to his wife Viola. John and Viola have been members of our church since 1963.

The funeral will be held on Saturday, July 26th, 2008 at Valley View Memorial Gardens: 14644 72 Ave, Surrey, in the Main Chapel at 1:30 pm.

A viewing is arranged for 1:00 pm for those who wish to pay their last respects to John.

There will be a committal service at the graveside following the funeral service.

A reception tea is arranged following the graveside. The reception will be at the chapel.
Our church has been asked to provide sweets for the reception in the form of squares or cookies. Please drop these off at the reception area at the chapel before service begins.

In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that those wishing to honour John's memory make a donation to the Valley Community Church Building Fund. John's enduring desire was see a new church built.

Vacation Bible School - August 11-15

This year's Vacation Bible School is called Cactus Canyon. The week of August 11-15 will be one crazy western adventure as we learn about the truth in John 3:16. Kids are encourages to wear their western duds, but it is not manditory. This event is in cooperation with Surrey Pentecostal Assembly and is being held at their church 16870 80th Avenue in Surrey (see http://www.surreychurch.org/ for directions).

Ages: 4 to 12 are welcome.

Time: 9am to noon

Cost: $20 per child or $30 per family

There is a special BBQ on Friday for all children and their families. Sign up at the registration desk on Monday, August 11.

Welcome to our website and to the beginning of your connection to our church. I hope that this information with help you grow closer to Christ and to the other worshippers in the church.

If someone was to ask me what I felt our church should be about it would have to be Love God and Love Your Neighbor. When Jesus said that these two things encapsulated the entire law of God, he put into focus how his followers should live. We need to be about loving God and loving others.

So what are you going to do to love God?
You may choose to pray and thank God for his goodness to you.
You may choose to write a journal and record your thoughts about God and yourself.
You may choose to sing, shout or otherwise express yourself verbally to God.
You may choose to write a poem or song to God to be read by others.

When we are together for church services we pray, sing and listen to teaching about the Lord. When our hearts are engaged in what we do, we are touched by God's Spirit and we have in turn expressed our love for our Heavenly Father.

So what are you going to do to love others?
You may choose to be kind to someone who is troubled.
You may choose to write a note to someone who is worthy of praise or needs encouragement.
You may choose to invite another family over for dinner.
You may choose to help a friend or neighbor do a job.

When we are together as Christians we need to encourage, help and show we care. God is pleased when we contribute in positive ways to the lives of others.

We cannot go wrong when we choose to love.
